Arsenal skipper Thomas Vermaelen is optimistic that he will be able to be of service to the Belgian national team in the upcoming World Cup despite being used primarily as a reserve at the Emirates this season.

The 28-year-old full-back has only featured fourteen times for the Gunners in the Premier League, starting only seven of those games, while remaining on the bench when the north Londoners defeated Hull City in the FA Cup finals last Saturday.

"I've a lot of experience of sitting on the bench then coming back so I'm not worried about being match fit," Vermaelen told The Sun.

"There is still plenty of preparation time for the World Cup and I will have the chance to play in a few friendly games before the tournament starts."

"A lot of people are talking about this Belgian team and wondering how we will do in Brazil."

"For the rest of us, it will be the first time and we go there with ambition."

The former Ajax standout has been the subject of rumours in the past few months as his involvement in the first-team has been limited this term, but has, nevertheless, vowed to concentrate on what's in front of him first.

"I am not thinking beyond that. Next season is the future and we will see about that."
