Queensland MP Peter Dowling’s mistress has enjoyed spending the taxpayers’ money. The lover of the disgraced Australian politician revealed that she enjoyed luxury that other people paid when she was with him.

On Tuesday, Mr Dowling stepped aside from his role as chair of the parliamentary ethics committee after it was revealed that he often texted his mistress, known only as Roslyn, explicit sexual messages and images, including a picture of his penis in a glass of red wine.

The Courier-Mail first reported about Mr Dowling’s affair.

His speech on the Parliament was full of apology to his family, including to his wife Helen, whom he has been married for 27 years, and to his two children.,

“I am not proud of the events plastered all over today’s paper and I cannot and will not defend any part of it,” Mr Dowling said as he stepped down as a member of the Parliamentary Crime and Misconduct Commission as well. “I do not want pity. I only ask that my family be left alone while this matter is considered by the Clerk.”

He denied breaching parliamentary guidelines in relation to travel, however.

His mistress, meanwhile, told Nine News in an interview that he used public resources while he conducted his affair with her. She had been involved with Mr Dowling for over two years.

“I enjoyed the people’s money, too, when I stayed in the hotel rooms,” she said. “I enjoyed he perks of the Australian taxpayers’ [money] because I was in the hotel with him.”

Roslyn kept every message on her Facebook, including intimate messages and pictures.

She also said that she told parliament officials about the affair months ago, but Premier Campbell Newman claimed that he was only made aware of the scandal on Monday.

Mr Dowling is currently under investigation by the clerk of the parliament if he failed to disclose all interests. If necessary, his case would be referred to the ethics committee and the Crime and Misconduct Commission.

Roslyn alleged that she went public with the affair because the politician was still pursuing her.

“We pay him for this job and I do believe in this case that yes he does, he should be made accountable.”
