Australia’s Next Top Model Choking Controversy Hits the Tube; What to Expect from the “Ugly Incident” that Rocked Modeling World
It was an “ugly incident’ that shocked the modeling world. ‘Australia’s Next Top Model’ has been beset with controversy recently following the choking incident involving its two contestants, Taylah Roberts and Ashley Pogmore, both 18.
The incident occurred when the two hopefuls were filming with the others for an episode of the reality competition at Broken Hill in New South Wales.
It started when they were just having fun while attending an art class. They decided to heat up the class a bit by throwing paint on each other. After realizing that some paint have stained her clothes, Taylah however, decided to take matters into her hands, literally.
After Taylah saw her strained shirt, she initiated a paint fight but she went overboard when she, knowingly or not, placed her hands around Ashley’s neck.
Though it started out like some two girls, having fun, they lost their balance and the two landed on their backs, with Taylah’s hands still gripping Ashley’s neck.
They were still smiling until Ashley felt Taylah’s grips were getting tighter and she was having a hard time breathing.
"It was getting really tight and I could just feel my neck hurting and I could feel my face going red and that's when I've kind of wrapped my legs around her and then we've fallen into the bushes and she's landed straight on top of me on my chest," Ashley said in an interview with A Current Affair.
Ashley added, “We were laughing and then it got to that point where I don't think she really realised her own strength."
Realizing her actions, Taylah then apologized to Ashley, exclaiming her regrets over the choking incident.
"It's just one of those things that just happened so quickly and once I'd done it, I knew that it was the wrong thing to do," Taylah said.
The modeling world was shocked. Those who had seen the incident were left agape, dumbfounded. They saw Taylah differently since then. But not Ashley. The 18-year old hopeful was the first to forgive Taylah.
"Obviously violence isn't right and I'm not sitting here defending what she's done, but I'm defending who she is as a person," Ashley noted.
The incident was kept under wraps among the contestants, the producers and the network’s top honchos.
Australia’s Top Next Model judge Charlott Dawson described the incident as a “playground situation.”
She said, "It was like a playground situation where maybe a stronger character picks on a more vulnerable character and things get out of control."
But she was quick to admit that there is something needed to be done after the incident.
Dawson claimed, “I mean it happens too much in the playground so we can't tolerate it on our show…It’s very polarising. It went from fun to serious.”
What then are they going to do about it?
Will this mean the end for Taylah’s career? The fate of an eighteen-year old girl with so much to offer will be defined after the incident.
