'Avengers: Age Of Ultron': A Grey Hulk Was Supposed To Appear In The Hulkbuster Sequence
A green angry giant was not supposed to be featured in the Hulkbuster action sequence in “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” Instead, Hulk was meant to turn grey to represent the more savage side of the comic book character.
The Industrial Light & Magic team that worked on the visual effects on "Avengers: Age of Ultron" recently told Wired magazine about the film’s initial plan of changing colours. ILM Supervisor Ben Snow, who specifically worked on the Hulk’s visual effects, revealed that the green giant was actually initially “planned to turn grey when he is angry in the Hulkbuster sequence.” But majority of the fans reportedly wanted to see a green and not grey Hulk. “So in the end, ILM just changed his eyes to make them look more sullen when he is under the control of Scarlet Witch,” Snow added.
Hulk supposedly turning grey in the film was already hinted even before the sequel was released on theatres. A photo of a Hot Topic “Avengers: Age of Ultron” merchandise from Funko Pop Vinyl featured a grey Hulk. The toy line even labeled the movie tie-in product as the “Savage Hulk.” By then it was rumoured Bruce Banner would turn into the grey Hulk after being bewitched by Scarlet Witch.
It wouldn’t have been far-fetched as well if a grey Hulk was featured in the final Hulkbuster sequence in “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” In the comics the original Stan Lee and Jack Kirby Hulk creation was intentionally grey. However, according to Cinema Blend the printing press couldn’t get the grey colour right since it continued coming out green. So in the end the creators went along with the green Hulk.
The grey Hulk reportedly has a different personality compared to its green counterpart. “He was not as strong as Green Hulk, but smarter and also more manipulative,” Cinema Blend writer Catarina Cowden said. However, in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” the green Hulk was portrayed to reflect the savage giant that was supposed to be the grey Hulk. In the film, the angry giant turned violent and out of control as he practically almost destroyed an entire city.
