Bandai Namco's new RPG 'Code Vein' gameplay and story revealed
Bandai Namco has recently revealed more details on their upcoming role-playing game called “Code Vein.” The new project has “God Eater” staff Keita Iizuka as producer, Hiroshi Yoshimura as director and Yusuke Tomizawa as team leader. The video game’s story is set in the society of “Vein” which is set in the near future where the world is in shambles and its inhabitants (called “Revenants”) are struggling to survive.
These Revenants are barely holding on to the remnants of their humanity, and the only way to maintain their sense of being human is by sucking blood. While Revenants lose most of their memories as a means of payment for their supernatural powers, they inevitably turn into monsters called “Lost” if they run out of their blood supply. The story thus follows players as Revenants in their journey to the truth behind their existence and if there is still hope in escaping this dreary world.
“Code Vein” gameplay features a buddy system that has players exploring the game’s vast world. These buddies can help players as they progress through the game’s story. Equipment comes in the form of “Blood Veils” which are used by Revenants in order to extract blood from enemies. Typically, Blood Veils resemble clothing, but they also feature armour-like characteristics. Weapons, on the other hand, are varied according to a player’s own style. Among the Revenant weapons are halberds and swords which have their own features that can be utilised in relation to a player’s own approach.
Absorbing the blood of enemies allows Revenants to utilise Gifts. According to Gematsu, these are special abilities that carry a plethora of effects, ranging from strength enhancement to the weakening of opponents. Such abilities are crucial, especially when taking into consideration the expansive landscape that can be explored in the game. Locations range from icy mountains to underground caves. These have more to offer than what may be perceived at first glance as some locations have blind spots that may surprise players with sudden attacks from foes.
As per Eurogamer, “Code Vein” will be released on major home consoles, though this has yet to be elaborated on by its developer. It is slated for a 2018 launch.
