Barack Obama, Joe Biden rekindle bromance over lunch
Former US President Barack Obama and former Vice President Joe Biden have proved real friendships last more than two terms of eight years. The Democratic politicians surprised customers of a bakery in Washington, DC, when they ordered and ate lunch together on Monday.
Obama and Biden were spotted lining up to get lunch at the Dog Tag Bakery in Georgetown to have a quick lunch. The establishment is owned and operated by a non-profit organisation that aims to help veterans injured in the line of duty.
With colour-matching long-sleeved shirts, the duo kept their bromance alive at the eatery, ordering the same sandwich. In the video, they can be seen deliberating what they would order together.
“Hold on a sec, what did you get here?” Obama asked Biden, who answered, “I’ve got one of these. What are they called, ham and cheese?”
“I think I’ll have one of those, too,” the ex-president said.
“Give the boss one of those, too,” Biden told the man behind the counter. Obama also ordered a fennel salad and cake. Both were also seen holding cash to pay for their food.
Dog Tag Bakery chief executive Meghan Ogilvie said Obama and Biden’s presence in the place caused some commotion, with other customers also getting a chance to talk to the two.
“I’m a little bit awestruck,” Ogilvie told the Washington Post, adding she made sure all 13 of the nonprofit’s fellows were in the café the meet them. “They shook every fellow’s hand, hugged them and listened to their stories. It was just a phenomenal scene.”
According to its website, the organisation has a fellowship program that empowers service-disabled veterans, military spouses and caregivers to discover personal and professional fulfilment in the civilian world through an innovative business and entrepreneurship fellowship. The five-month program allows the fellows to earn a certificate in Business Administration from Georgetown University’s School of Continuing Studies and other workshops and programs.
According to the Post, Obama and Biden got to enjoy their lunch together for about 10 minutes before they headed out. When they left the place, a small crowd had already gathered outside to meet them.
“It was really just such an uplifting moment for everybody,” Ogilvie said.
