Battle of the Kylies: Kylie Minogue and Kylie Jenner hope to resolve name problem soon
Model and teen reality star Kylie Jenner wants to trademark her first name in the United States. Naturally, Kylie Minogue, the Australian pop princess is not that happy about it. Minogue’s representatives filed a notice of opposition last week with the US Patent and Trademark Office.
They argued that if they approve Jenner’s application, it would cause confusion and adulterate Minogue’s brand. This was reported by World Intellectual Property Review. Jenner started advertising her trademark application six months back and Minogue is all set to put Jenner on the firing line.
The Melbourne company KDB that represents Minogue filed a notice of opposition to the application last Monday. They cited existing trademark registration on Minogue’s name that includes music recordings and entertainment services.
Although Jenner’s trademark application sought protection for the name “Kylie” for the advertising services, Minogue’s representatives described Jenner as a “secondary reality television personality who appeared on the television series Keeping Up With the Kardashians as a supporting character.”
Jenner has been criticised by African-American communities and also disability rights groups. According to News.com.au, Jenner hit the headlines for the wring reasons when she posed on a wheelchair for a fashion photoshoot apparently trying to highlight the career problems of the disabled in the fashion and entertainment industry. The photos were reported to be offensive since they sexualised the struggles of the disabled people.
Moreover, Jenner also bought her mixed race friend a birthday cake that had the message, “happy birthday N****.” According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Minogue seems to have the edge in the legal stoush. Minogue owns trademarks for terms such as “Lucky — the Kylie Minogue musical,” “Kylie Minogue darling” and “Kylie Minogue.”
Since Aug. 21, 1996, Minogue owns the domain name kylie.com and her debut album, which was named “Kylie,” sold 500,000 copies in the US.
Minogue even tweeted, “Hello..... My name is KYLIE #lightyears” and “I will be your purser #lightyears” to point out she is the real Kylie. Her fans responded by saying “The one and only.”
