Beers in Space: Now You Can Have a Cold Brew Anywhere
Now you can sip on a cold beer when you're gazing at the wonders of the cosmos. A Sydney microbrewery has created the world's first beer that can be drunk in space.
4 Pines Brewing Company worked with American company Saber Astronomics and developed in conjunction with Queensland University of Technology's zero-gravity drop tower to create this truly out of this world beer.
"We tested three recipes and were able to observe them side by side," said Jason Held, Saber Astronomics space engineer and co-creator of the unique brew. "We could see how each behaved and used some of that data to select the right one."
The QUT's drop tower played a key role in getting the carbonation and flavor of the beer right. The drop tower, the only one in the southern hemisphere, determined if the beer had too much carbonation which would mean "wet burps" in zero gravity. The space beer also needed to have strong flavor because astronauts lose taste sensitivity in space.
"We had to have a full-bodied beer to cut through that lack of sensitivity in the tongue," Mitchell said.
The beer had already passed when tested on one person in a so-called "vomit comet"- a commercial jet that is able to climb and dive to duplicate several 30-second periods of zero gravity. The company will next test the special beer with 15 people.
Dr. Held explained that he and Mr. Mitchell came up with a beer that could be consumed in space to meet future demands of the space-tourism industry, especially with the proposed flights in 2012 with Virgin Galactic.
"There's Virgin Galactic, XCOR and three or four others that will be flying over the next five years," Held said. Russia has also planned a "space hotel" where the beer could be served.
The pair's next challenge is developing a bottle that could hold the beer in space.
