Millions of Filipinos hooked on the hit gay-themed soap opera of GMA-7, My Husband's Lover, are preparing to say good-bye to their favourite bekiserye.

Two main cast members of the soap, actress Carla Abellana who portrays Lally, the martyr wife of gay husband Vincent (played by Tom Rodriguez), and singer Kuh Ledesma, who plays her snooty mother-in-law Elaine, have confirmed the much-talked about soap is ending in October.

While fans would surely miss their serving of gay love affair five days a week, they can perhaps take solace that another gay-themed story will be shown on the big screen on Sept 11. Titled Lihis, the independent film stars Joem Bascon and Jake Cuenca as communist rebels who fell in love with each other.

Given the love story angle, although it is also very much a political film set in the 1980s, the movie could actually have been titled My Cadre's Lover or My Comrade's Lover, to ride on the popularity of My Husband's Lover. However, the producer of the film is avoiding any references to the GMA soap opera so as not to be accused of piggybacking on My Husband's Lover's success.

Last week's storyline of My Husband's Lover was another confirmation of the pending end of the bekiserye since Vince had already admitted to his mum that he is gay, while Lally likewise told the truth to her own mother and sister.

The trailer for this week's My Husband's Lover showed that Vincent's father, played by Roi Vinzons, finally learned about the truth also and is about the explode in anger over the discovery.

The soap opera, despite earning the ire of Philippine bishops, has definitely changed the outlook of Filipino viewers when it comes to same-sex relationships, which made it easier for movies like Lihis to attract the same audience who follow the soap five days a week.

Even Ledesma, who initially had a conservative outlook toward gays when the soap opera began, has been changed and is now clamouring for the extension of the bekiserye beyond October.

In June when the soap started to air, Kuh has been quoted that she believes gay relationship is wrong in the eyes of God, based on her born-again Christian outlook, but homosexuality could be healed when prayed over. She even cited the case of a close male relative who was "reformed" because of the pray over.

However, after three months of acting in the soap, like her character Elaine who has accepted Vincent's gay character, the diva has also learned to be more accepting of same-sex relationships.

Her lessons learned include women who get pregnant out of wedlock should not see marriage as a solution to their problem, like what happened to Lally, and same-sex relationships are a reality in Philippine society.

"I have four friends whom I know experienced similar to what they (Lally, Vincent and Eric, played by Dennis Trillo) went through and not all women know about that," Pep.ph quoted the diva.

"For me, My Husband's Lover is very important that it aired because it open the eyes of the people," said Kuh, whose eyes apparently were also opened by the bekiserye.
