With LeBron James back with the Cleveland Cavaliers, it’s only apt that the some players, including his own teammate are trying to re-ignite the Cavaliers vs. Washington Wizards rivalry, which was so ripe during James’ first tenure in Cleveland in the early to mid-2000s.

In their team’s NBA Media Day, Wizards shooting guard Bradley Beal declared that along with point guard John Wall, his team has the best backcourt in the entire league.

In an interview after a Cavaliers practice on Tuesday, shooting guard Dion Waiters was asked of the pronouncement from Beal and did not hesitate to share his opinion.

“That's nonsense. (Beal is) supposed to say that, but I know deep down, he's not messing with me and Ky (Kyrie Irving). I think me and Ky are the best backcourt, young backcourt. That's all,” Waiters said via ESPN.com.

The back-and-forth did not stop there as Wall himself joined the better backcourt debate as well via Abdullah Sharif, a sports reporter for Hoop District which covers the Washington Wizards:

“They haven’t seen a playoff game yet, so when they make one, they can start talking,” Wall said. “If you’re going to be the best backcourt, you have to start. This is the year he’s probably starting, so let’s see if they’re the best backcourt.”

When LeBron James suited up for the Cavaliers from 2003 to 2010, Cleveland met the Wizards three times in the postseason— from 2006 to 2008— in a one-sided but memorable playoff series. The Cavs won 3-0 in those meetings but a budding rivalry was established highlighted by great scoring games from James and former Wizard Gilbert Arenas and even the trash-talking between James and ex-Wiz DeShawn Stevenson.

With James back in town, it appears that it’s high time to bring back the old Cavs vs. Wiz rivalry.

Courtesy of young guns Dion Waiters, Bradley Beal and John Wall, the King doesn’t need to do anything to make future Cleveland vs. Washington match-ups a must-watch in the upcoming 2014-2015 NBA Season.
