Bethesda and Mojang Engage in Legal Deathmatch
Quake 3 Deathmatch Not Good Enough
Bethesda has rejected Markus "Notch" Persson's challenge for a Quake deathmatch and instead opted to go to court over their trademark claim over the word "Scroll" in their The Elder Scrolls series.
Mojang's new game entitled Scrolls is a digital card game in a game board setting with the game's story written by Penny-Arcade's Jerry Holkins.
Mojang's trouble started after they announced the game with Bethesda sending a letter informing them that they are infringing their trademark on The Elder Scrolls with their game still under development.
Mr. Persson suggested a compromise to never put anything before the word Elder in sequels. Instead the sequels be named along the lines of, in his own words, "Scrolls - The Banana Expansion." In Aug. 17, after his wedding, Mr. Persson has come up with the idea of challenging Bethesda in a Quake 3 deathmatch. "I challenge Bethesda to a game of Quake 3.
Three of our best warriors against three of your best warriors." he said in his blog. "If we win, you drop the lawsuit. If you win, we will change the name of Scrolls to something you're fine with."
While the impending suit was considered silly by the independent developer, Bethesda stayed true to their word with the suit and on Sept. 27, Markus "Notch" Persson twitted "The Scrolls case is going to court! Weee! :D"
In the worst case scenario, Mojang might have to change the game title. Obviously not going with anything containing the word "The" and "Elder."
