‘Better Call Saul’ season 3: Burger King wants Giancarlo Esposito to advertise as Gus Fring
“Better Call Saul” season 3 has created quite a stir among audiences as Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) is all set to return in the prequel spinoff. The news of Gus’ return was announced in a unique manner by releasing a fake commercial of Los Pollos Hermanos, a fictional restaurant that Gus owned in the original crime drama series. Esposito has recently revealed that since the ad has been released, he has been receiving requests to advertise for fast food chains such as Burger King.
The advertisement was telecast on late night TV in Albuquerque, New Mexico, leaving viewers confused if what they saw was real or just a dream. Esposito said that he himself stayed up to watch the advertisement. Interestingly, since then, he has been receiving requests from other brands to advertise as Gus Fring. His manager has been fielding phone calls “from Burger King and other people, wanting to know if I would advertise their product as Gus.”
Esposito’s also revealed that it was his idea to do a fake commercial. He said that from the time he started working at the restaurant on screen, the idea to feature in something that was “commercial-like” was always on his mind. “But when I thought of it earlier on, with Breaking Bad, it just didn't fit,” he said.
However, when he was roped in for “Better Call Saul" season 3, he thought then was the time to go for it. “I thought, this is the perfect way to tease a Gus Fring return because this show has some comedy in it. It's a little funnier than “Breaking Bad” was.”
Nevertheless, Esposito was sceptical about sharing his idea with co-creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould. He was unsure if they would accept the idea. “I thought, it doesn't matter whether they do or not, it came to you; put it out there. So I did, and I even guided them as to what it might look like.” Gilligan and Gould loved his idea and gave it a green light. Esposito said that it was like a dream come true “because it allowed me to exercise a different part of my creativity,” he told Adweek.
“Better Call Saul” season 3 will be launched on April 10 in the US. The show previously aired on Stan in Australia. The streaming company has not announced about streaming third season in Australia yet.
