Amidst the controversy around their marriage, a friend of Kris Humphries says the NBA star is "getting though it."

After a whirlwind romance and 72 days of marriage, Kim Kardashian filed divorce Monday.

Shortly after, Kim was seen leaving Los Angeles with sister Khloé heading to Australia to promote their Kardashian Kollection bag. Noticeably, the ring on her finger is missing. Humphries headed to Minnesota, where he grew up and most of his family resides.

"He's getting through it day by day," Kris' friend said. "It's a tough situation."

He was seen again "for the first time" heading to a Minnesota gym last Thursday, focusing on his fitness while he's out of the NBA court. A witness said Kris was working our "intensely" with his wedding ring still on his finger. Humphries also had to cancel a commitment in Las Vegas due to divorce issues.

"It's not an easy position for anyone," the source said. "He's a gentleman and wants to make things right - the ring and any gift he gave her was out of love and he doesn't expect them back."

The source also added that Kardashian and Humphires are making efforts to return the wedding gifts from their guests.
