‘Blade Runner 2’ Update: Harrison Ford confirmed to reprise his role, Ryan Gosling set to join the cast
Ridley Scott is busy dropping some interesting details about his future projects while promoting his upcoming film “The Martian.”
One of his high-profile projects include “Blade Runner 2,” which is currently in the works with the original team of Scott and Hampton Fancher as scriptwriters. Harrison Ford is set to reprise his role as Rick Deckard, while Ryan Gosling is set to join the cast.
Scott told Yahoo Movies that they will use Gosling as the jump-off point in the film. “It was 2017, so coming back it’ll be 2047 roughly. As young as you can play Ryan Gosling. He’s 34, but he looks 27 when he’s doing his push-ups. So maybe 2050.”
Ford starred in the original film as Rick Deckard, a bounty hunter who worked for the police department to track down Replicants (androids) who are indistinguishable from adult humans.
According to Scott, Ford did not give his nod instantaly to star in the reboot, and it is after reading the script, the veteran actor changed his mind. He also addressed the long running question of whether or not Harrison Ford’s character is a replicant, saying “of course he’s a bloody Replicant! He’s going to have to admit it.”
All these details are likely to make the fans of the original film wonder about the circumstances in which Ford’s character will return, as Replicants only have a life span of four years. Scott did not comment on that but said that everything will make sense once the film comes out.
Scott also revealed that multiple sequels are in the pipeline for his other projects, including the “Prometheus” franchise. Neither denying nor confirming anything, he said that there is a possibility that the “Blade Runner” franchise will not stop at second film.
“Blade Runner” is a 1982 science-fiction film based on the 1968 novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" written by Philip K. Dick. The film depicts a dystopian version of Los Angeles in year 2019 where genetically engineered androids called Replicants are manufactured by powerful mega-corporations for dangerous work on off-world colonies.
