Blake Shelton speaks up on recording for 'If I'm Honest' and split with Miranda Lambert
The country singer shares his inspiration for "If I'm Honest"
Blake Shelton has shared his heartbreak after divorce with Miranda Lambert in an exclusive interview. The 40-year-old "The Voice" judge and the "Little Red Wagon" singer called it quits in mid-2015. After their split, Blake began dating "Hollaback Girl" Gwen Stefani.
In an interview with Billboard on Thursday, Blake revealed that the tracks in his latest album "If I'm Honest" were written after his emotional split with Miranda, who was his wife for four years.
“When we recorded the vocals for some of these songs, I was only six months removed from when all the crap went down,” the country musician opened up. He stated that working on the album became an emotional outlet for his experience. "You want people to sympathize with you,” he added. The singer described that he was "in the middle of hell” after the divorce.
One of the tracks in "If I'm Honest" hinted that Miranda may have cheated on him during their marriage. The song "She's Got a Way With Words" talks about a woman who lies to her lover and goes out with other men behind his back. The chorus contains lyrics that go "she put the her in hurt" and "she put a big F.U. in my future."
"You can learn some facts of my divorce," Blake explained. "Maybe not specifics, but you can get a general idea about it. It is my divorce record, but maybe even more than that, it's my happy, falling-in-love record too." Billboard described "If I'm Honest" as his "richest album."
The "king and queen of country" made headlines in June 2015 upon announcing their divorce. Four months later, Blake began dating Gwen, who was also his co-judge on "The Voice." According to Hollywood Life, the two recorded “Go Ahead And Break My Heart” together and have been dating for more than a year.
