Boxing News 2015: Legendary commentator Larry Merchant not interested in Mayweather-Berto bout
Larry Merchant is stating that he is not interested in the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Andre Berto fight on Saturday. The veteran commentator, who is one of the most respected in the business, stated in a recent interview that he will not be one of the boxing fans, either live or via pay-per-view, who is excited to watch the fight.
“Who? Mayweather versus Berto? Who’s that? I don’t even know who [he] is,” Merchant said via TMZ Sports when asked about the Mayweather-Berto bout and about Mayweather’s unheralded opponent in Berto. “I usually expect serious fighters to fight serious opponents. I think serious fight fans are asking themselves, ‘why’?”
Merchant, who has been inducted to the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 2002 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2009, went on to add that he would have wanted to see Mayweather pick an opponent like Gennady Golovkin, who is one of the rising stars in the sport and is undefeated in his boxing career like Mayweather.
Mayweather holds a perfect record in his career with 48 wins against zero losses while Berto has 30 wins against 3 losses. Mayweather is coming off the biggest win in his career beating Manny Pacquiao last May 2 via a 12-round unanimous decision victory.
Berto is just 3-3 in his last three bouts and is not considered as a serious threat in giving Mayweather’s loss, according to most boxing critics.
The Mayweather-Berto fight is scheduled on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada in the United States. The fight will be for the World Boxing Council world welterweight title and the World Boxing Association super world welterweight title.
