Boxing News: Australian Daniel Geale Gets World Title Shot, Faces Miguel Cotto On June 6 In New York
Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico is set to face Australian boxer Daniel Geale on June 6, 2015 to defend his World Boxing Council, or WBC title at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
The Cotto vs. Geale development is being reported by Fight Hype’s Ben Thompson, who is also stating that the bout will be at a catchweight of 157 pounds.
Cotto, who has 39 wins against 4 losses in his pro career, is ranked the No. 1 Puerto Rican in the middleweight division and second overall to Gennady Golovkin, who. Geale is ranked No. 7 in the division in most boxing rankings.
The 34-year-old Geale, who resides in Mt. Annan, New South Wales and was born in Launceston, Tasmania in Australia, has 31 wins against 3 losses in his pro boxing career. Geale won the vacant Pan Asian Boxing Association, or PABA middleweight and interim World Boxing Organization, or WBO Asia Pacific middleweight titles on Dec. 3, 2014 when the Australian beat compatriot Jarrod Fletcher via a 12-round unanimous decision victory.
This is Geale’s second shot at a world title in the past year after he got beat by Golovkin on July 26, 2014 when the International Boxing Organization, or IBO and World Boxing Association, or WBA middleweight titles were at stake. Golovkin defeated Geale via technicial knockout in the third round.
Cotto, who now fights under the Roc Nation Sports boxing promotion, won the WBC middleweight belt after defeating Sergio Martinez in June 2014 when he dominated the bout in 10 rounds with judges’ scores of 90-77, 90-77 and 90-77. Cotto is just 2-2 in his last four fights but is coming off back-to-back wins after beating Delvin Rodriguez on Oct. 5, 2013.
Cotto lost to Floyd Mayweather and Austin Trout in two bouts in 2012. Before the big bout between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao was finalised for May 2, 2015, Cotto was rumoured to be one of the probable opponents for Mayweather.
