Boxing News: Miguel Cotto vs Tim Bradley Could Fight In June 2015
Miguel Cotto, who is rumoured to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. if the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight doesn’t push through, may be moving on to considering other fights with news that the the Puerto Rican Cotto will taking on Timothy Bradley of the United States.
Ben Thompson of fighthype.com is reporting the development and is saying that if Mayweather-Pacquiao is not done then Cotto will consider the rematch with the undefeated American. Initially,
there were talks the Cotto would be facing Canelo Alvarez on May 2, 2015. But the Alvarez camp, led by former boxing great and now Golden Boy Promotions chief Oscar De La Hoya, pulled the plug on the negotiations after they failed to agree on certain aspects of the deal. Alvarez will be facing James Kirkland on that date. The Cotto vs. Bradley fight is expected to happen in a catchweight of 155 or 156 pounds, according to Thompson.
Bradley is a former title holder of the World Boxing Organisation, or WBO, world super lightweight title in 2011 and the WBO world welterweight title in 2013. In Bradley, Cotto will be facing a former two-division champion. The 31 year old Bradley has won seven of his lastnine bouts but has lost one and drew another in his last two. Bradley lost to Manny Pacquiao via unanimous decision on April 12, 2014 then had a split draw with Diego Gabriel Chaves in his last bout on Dec. 12, 2014.
The 34 year old Cotto has won his last two bouts but has 2 wins and 2 losses in the last four. Cotto won over Sergio Gabriel Martinez after his opponent retired in the 10th round for the World Boxing Council, or WBC, world middleweight title on June 7, 2014. Before that, Cotto defeated Delvin Rodriguez via a third round technical knockout on Oct. 10, 2013. Cotto lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Austin Trout in 2012. Cotto lost the WBA world super welterweight title in the bout against Trout.
