“Brooklyn Nine-Nine” season 5, episode 1 is set to air in September, according to Fox. Fans will be looking forward to the opener to find out what exactly happens to Jake (Andy Samberg) and Rosa (Stephanie Beatriz), who were found guilty for something they did not commit. And if last season’s guest list is any indication, the upcoming set of episodes should feature a slew of star-studded appearances.

Spoiler alert: This recap contains plot details about “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”

It’s official, Niners. Everybody’s favourite police comedy series returns in three months. The fifth season’s opening episode will air on September 26 in the US. The show’s official Facebook page confirmed the season premiere date.

The squad went through a lot of things in season 4. After spending six months in Coral Palms due to the threat that was Jimmy “The Butcher” Figgis (Eric Roberts), Jake and Captain Holt (Andre Braugher) finally reunited with the Nine-Nine in the season’s third episode. But it wasn’t all peachy after the reunion as the whole precinct had to go through night shift hell following their return.

Fast forward to the season finale, where Jake and Rosa found themselves facing up to 15 years in prison for something they did not do. Hard-core lieutenant Melanie Hawkins (Gina Gershon) put them in a tight spot after carefully and cunningly setting them up as crooked cops. It remains to be seen if Jake and Rosa survive their seemingly impossible-to-get-out-of dilemma.

Here’s hoping that the upcoming season will also feature more guest appearances like the previous one. Besides Roberts and Gershon, the fourth season also saw big name stars like Nathan Fillion, Maya Rudolph, Greg Germann, Jim O’Heir and Ken Marino, who played the goofy Captain CJ. Super Bowl XLVIII champion and current Oakland Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch even joined the stellar guest list last season.

One of season four’s guest stars that is expected to return for a number of episodes next season is “Cruel Intentions” lead actor Ryan Phillippe, who played Gina’s (Chelsea Peretti) baby daddy and Charles’ (Joe Lo Truglio) cousin named Milton. Charles was very much displeased when he found out that the cousin he considers to be the black sheep of the family was the one who got Gina pregnant. The disdain is certainly perplexing since Milton is not only an attractive Boyle, he’s also a successful pro snowboarder and the owner of a winter apparel company.

“Brooklyn Nine-Nine” season 5 will be available for Australian viewers to watch on SBS. Barring any changes, episode 1 should air on Wednesday, September 27 at 8:00 p.m.
