Cara Delevingne on why she chose acting over modelling: 'Modelling just made me feel a bit hollow after a while'
Supermodel and Victoria's Secret Angel Cara Delevingne has quit being a model because the profession did not make her feel good about her body. The 23-year-old will not take any new modelling assignments and is channelising her energies into acting.
“I am not doing fashion work any more,” Delevingne, who has been the face of many international brands like Burberry, Mango, Chanel and Topshop, told The Times Magazine in a new interview. “Modelling just made me feel a bit hollow after a while. It didn’t make me grow at all as a human being. And I kind of forgot how young I was … I felt so old,” Delevingne added.
The “Paper Towns” star also talked about psoriasis – a kind of non-contagious skin infection she developed once. The resulting scars on skin became difficult to hide even with the make-up. She remembers people putting on gloves to touch her and do her make-up as if she suffered from “leprosy or something.” In the modelling world there is a lot of stress on looks and Delevingne started hating herself because of her her condition.
"It is a mental thing as well because if you hate yourself and your body and the way you look, it just gets worse and worse," she said. She also talked about the presence of sexual harassment in the modelling world. "It's horrible and it's disgusting. ...You start when you are really young and you do, you get subjected to…not great stuff."
The model found solace in acting and is enjoying it as a career. She received good reviews for her debut performance in “Paper Towns.” "I have regained respect for myself, in a weird way, and on a movie set is where I feel like I belong. If that makes any sense," she said. The model turned actress is currently filming “Suicide Squad” with Jared Leto and Scott Eastwood.
