“Castle” Season 8 is happening, but there has been no official word on the return of Stana Katic’s Kate Beckett. A publication has reported Katic is “expected” to sign on for the eighth season, but the actress herself has been quiet since indulging her fans during filming of the Season 7 finale.

(UPDATE-May 12: In a statement released on Twitter, Stana Katic announced she is officially reprising her Kate Beckett role. Katic said she is "delighted" to be a part of "Castle" Season 8.)

Stana Katic has earlier mentioned one of her favourite Beckett moments will unravel in the “Castle” Season 7 finale. While waiting for this big moment, fans are left to speculate on the nature of the cliffhangers this year. Does Kate Beckett die, or does she go missing?

Nathan Fillion has formally expressed that he is playing Rick Castle for one more year. Meanwhile, citing unnamed sources, The Hollywood Reporter announced Stana Katic “is expected to close a new pact.” THR echoed what series creator Andrew Marlowe told Entertainment Weekly: If there is “Castle” Season 8, it won’t be like “Grey’s Anatomy.” (ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” lost a major character toward the end of its 11th season.)

“I feel like there are a lot of things that other people have to decide before I really have to decide,” Katic told TV Line in November. In the same interview, Katic said she’s thinking “art over finance.”

In her “Castle” Season 7 finale teasers, Katic did not elaborate on the big moment for Kate Beckett. Instead she gave fans a series of behind-the-scenes photos on Instagram during the last days of filming for the season.

ABC’s new episode synopsis for the “Castle” Season 7 finale includes a murder that reminds Rick Castle of a pivotal incident in his youth. It also takes Kate Beckett to a “turning point” in her life. This part of the synopsis has driven fans to speculate Beckett's death.

Instead of touching upon death, Marlowe told EW getting pregnant or having babies are in Beckett’s mind. Marlowe also told EW that the “Castle” Season 7 finale was written such that it could be an effective series finale and a new season springboard at the same time. Marlowe wrote “Hollander’s Woods” with his wife and longtime “Castle” producer, Terri Edda Miller. Paul Holahan directed the season-ender.
