Premier League rivals Chelsea and Manchester United were reported to have been making progress in their discussions involving Juan Mata earlier today, but a reliable source stated that the Red Devils have already made a formal bid, which is within the ballpark of £35million.

BBC Sport's David Bond disclosed that United, who has yet to confirm the said move, acted through an agent to make the offer to Chelsea.

The Spanish playmaker has struggled under the watch of Blues manager Jose Mourinho despite having been voted as Chelsea's Player of the Year twice in the past.

The Portuguese mentor, meanwhile, did not deny the 25-year-old's quality, but revealed that the latter's case is likened to that of a right player who is in the wrong squad.

"There are fantastic players, but sometimes the fantastic players are more fantastic to a certain system and less fantastic in a certain model of play," Mourinho referred to Mata, while talking to BBC Sport.

The fans should expect the confirmation from the Red Devils any time soon.
