Three children killed, one critically injured in a gruesome accident after a car crashed into a lake near Melbourne on Wednesday afternoon. The woman who was driving the car is under police guard in a hospital, and her condition is reportedly stable now. According to the emergency services, the car raced through a short distance of dense scrub before plunging into the lake.

Passersby and police got into the lake and punched holes through the vehicle's windows to rescue the people inside. Police informed that one child died on the spot, the second child died on the way to the hospital and the third one passed away in the hospital. The fourth child who is critically injured is fighting for life. According to the police, several emergency workers were present at the scene to treat the injured.

The detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit are investigating the cause of the crash. Superintendent Stuart Bateson said the only information they have is a female driver has been taken to the hospital. He also said it is not confirmed that the woman driving the car is the mother of the four children. "It's going to be a really harrowing investigation. It's really tough, it's tough on everyone involved," added the superintendent. Police also informed that all the kids were under the age of six.
