While mobile fighting games like “Injustice: Gods Among Us” and “Marvel’s Contest of Champions” have dominated the mobile spectrum, SNK has shown that it still has the fire to succeed. After a couple of recent “King of Fighters” releases, SNK has now launched one of its more well-known fighting games in the “Fatal Fury Special.”

Despite the title, “Fatal Fury Special” is actually a revamped version of “Fatal Fury 2.” Back in the day, when expansions and updates were not available yet, developers would re-release games so that they could add more characters as well as balance out some of the cheaper characters in the game. “Street Fighter 2” did it numerous times, with “Street Fighter 2 Turbo” being one of the more popular versions of that game.

The mobile port of “Fatal Fury Special” is a straight up port of the old Neo Geo game, according to a report from Siliconera. This means that the game will have all 16 fighters from the get-go and, like in most of the Neo Geo ports, there will be a virtual control stick so that it won’t be too difficult pulling off combos. There are also two extra buttons that will help inexperienced players pull off some of the special moves that are harder to do.

Unfortunately, the game is lacking in a couple of key features that were in previous Neo Geo ports. Touch Arcade notes that while multiplayer is available, it’s only through Bluetooth and not through Game Center like most mobile games that support multiplayer. There is also no MFI gamepad support, so players hoping to try this game out and use the gamepad to make it feel like a console fighting game will be out of luck.

“Fatal Fury” is available for both iOS and Android devices for $3.99, like most of the Neo Geo games SNK have been re-releasing. While missing a few features, it should probably satisfy any hardcore SNK fans who want to kick butt with their favourite characters.
