Country singer Eddie Montgomery’s 19 year old son, Hunter, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 27.

Montgomery, member of the country duo “Montgomery Gentry,” announced the sad news through a statement, E!News reported. The country singer stated that his 19 year old son, Hunter, “went to heaven” on Sunday and asked for privacy during this period. He also wrote, "I appreciate all your prayers and love and thank you for giving us privacy as we grieve and say goodbye."

The country singer’s son passed away after an accident, which left him on life support in a Kentucky hospital. Details about the accident was not shared.

Montgomery’s 19 year old son was engaged to his girlfriend in August 2014, with Hunter popping the question during one of his father’s concerts, People reported. The proposal was captured in a video shared by Dan Van Media.

Hunter was Montgomery’s youngest son with former wife, Tracy Nunan. The two share four children together and were married for 22 years before announcing their split in 2010. According to reports, the former couple’s divorce was around the time that Montgomery was diagnosed with prostate cancer. In 2011, the singer was declared cancer-free.

The past few years have been very challenging for the Montgomery Gentry singer, given his personal and financial challenges. Apart from his 2010 divorce and cancer battle, Montgomery also filed for individual bankruptcy in early 2014. According to reports, the country singer stated debt from a failed restaurant investment and divorce as the reason for the bankruptcy.

Meanwhile, fans have shared their condolences on social media via the Montgomery Gentry twitter account, CNN reported. The duo’s followers sent heartfelt messages, including Heather Froglear, who wrote “heartbroken” and “continued prayers” for Montgomery. Another fan, LeaBabin, also left supportive words on the duo’s Twitter page. She wrote, “Stay strong,” and added the hashtag “nogreaterheartache.”

Funeral arrangements for Hunter have yet to be finalised.
