A can of worms has been opened during a court proceeding involving Italian sisters accused of fraud for allegedly using company credit card for personal use, while being employed by former couple, Charles Saatchi and Nigella Lawson.

Citing an email evidence, a London court heard Lawson was using drugs at the time sisters Francesca Grillo, 35, and Elisabetta Grillo, 41, served as personal assistants to the celebrity couple.

While the case against the Grillos involves their alleged use of company money to treat themselves with designer handbags and purchasing plane tickets, the evidence against them, when heard was linked to the celebrity TV chef’s alleged “drug habit.”

The contention was made in the email sent by Saatchi to his ex-wife. The email showed Saatchi referring to Lawson’s drug use as the primary reason the Grillo sisters would escape the charges being hurled against them.

The email was read at the court proceeding in Isleworth Crown Court, West London on Tuesday, Nov. 26, according to The Daily Telegraph Australia.

The email reads: “Of course now the Grillos will get off on the basis that you... were so off your heads on drugs that you allowed the sisters to spend whatever they liked."

Francesca’s lawyer, Karina Arden, and Elizabetta’s counsel, Anthony Metzer QC, both submitted their respective client’s documents supporting their defense.

"We are submitting the row that happened resulting in Mr Saatchi assaulting Nigella may have had something to do with Nigella taking drugs and may have something to do with the issue before this court of whether she gave them (the defendants) authority to use the cards," defense barrister, Metzer was quoted as telling Judge Johnson, according to NineMSN Australia.

The same court proceeding heard that Lawson’s ex-husband, Saatchi is planning on accusing the celebrity host of being hooked to drugs, noting that the business tycoon was allegedly " astounded by the scale of drug use set out in the statements."

Following the lawyers’ submission to the West London court, Judge Robin Johnson ruled for the trial to proceed, said the Daily Telegraph.

"I consider, with the right rulings and the ability to monitor the process of the court during the process of the trial, a fair trial can be achieved and therefore I have refused this application," Judge Johnson said, noting The Daily Telegraph Australia reports.

The judge then concluded, saying he is allowing drug-related questions on the case.

"I will allow questions of Miss Lawson and witnesses as to the alleged taking of prescribed drugs or proscribed drugs," the judge said, according to NineMSN Australia.

Charles Saatchi and Nigella Lawson made headlines early this year when a picture of the former couple emerged online, showing Lawson visibly in pain as she was being choked by Saatchi.

While Lawson refused to make an official statement to counter Saatchi’s claim that it was just a “playful tiff,” the TV personality filed for divorced from her husband. They had been married since 2003 when the incident took place.
