‘Cruel Intentions’ TV series dead at NBC
It turns out “Cruel Intentions” still needs a home network. The TV adaptation of 1999 teen drama film has reportedly been dropped by US network NBC and may now have to find another channel if it wants to see the light of day.
Earlier this year, the peacock network picked up a pilot for the planned series, with Sarah Michelle Gellar signing on to reprise her role as the villainess Kathryn Merteuil. However, the project has apparently now been temporarily shelved.
According to Variety’s sources, the network has decided not to go forward with the series because it cannot fit the show into its schedule. Apparently, the network liked the project, but it has too many midseason shows to insert in its line-up to consider giving a slot to “Cruel Intentions.”
The network considered airing the show in mid-2017, but it already has picked up a variety of unscripted series, including Tyra Banks’ “Funded” and Lebron James’ “The Wall,” and so it’s unlikely “Cruel Intentions” would be given a timeslot.
Sony Pictures Television is now reportedly shopping around the show, and multiple networks have inquired about it.
“Cruel Intentions” the series will pick up 15 years after the film left off. Kathryn, who got her comeuppance in the film’s ending, will be back to fight for the control of Valmont International from Bash Casey, the teenage son of her late stepbrother Sebastian Valmont and Annette Hargrove, who were played by Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon in the film.
Taylor John Smith will play Bash, while Kate Levering will take on the role of Annette.
