Dave Grohl Helping Sick Australian Fan Complete His Bucket List
Dave Grohl is helping an Australian fans suffering from terminal cancer cross out an item from his bucket list. When the Foo Fighters frontman learnt of Ken Powell’s wish to meet his favourite band, he offered his support by giving him VIP tickets to their Los Angeles show.
Powell, 56, has stage four melanoma. A huge Foo Fighters fan, he has recently attended all six concerts of the rock group around the country despite hurting from pain. He wanted to meet Grohl in Perth, but the 46-year-old former Nirvana drummer was forced to cancel all his meet-and-greet sessions with his fans after suffering from food poisoning.
Devastated but determined, Powell would soon learn that his dream to meet his idols personally didn’t abruptly end there. According to Yahoo News, his friend Daniella Whitehead, who happened to be a Qantas flight attendant, told the Foo Fighters Powell’s story while she was serving the band during their flight home.
The band was touched and Grohl offered to make his dream a reality. The “Nicest Guy in Rock” greeted Powell with a photo sign and gave him souvenirs and VIP tickets to their Los Angeles show.
There’s just one hurdle to the dream, though. Grohl’s offer didn’t include plane tickets from Australia to the U.S. That’s why he and his family have set up an online fundraising for his travel fees. He was originally just aiming for $20,000 on GoFundMe.com, but the amount was raised to $30,000 so they could also send a check to Melanoma Institute Australia, which has supported Powell for over nine years.
“He is a walking (sometimes wheelchair rolling) miracle. With strength and determination and now your support he has a wish to make a big tick on his bucket list,” the description on his online fundraising page reads, “You might be asking what is this bucket list item???... To meet The Foo Fighters in America along with supporting some other very important charities close to his heart.” (sic)
So far, Powell has collected over $23,000 from almost 900 people in just two weeks. The page didn’t mention a specific date for the concert, only that it will be held in September, though a quick look at the Foo Fighters’ official site reveals that the Los Angeles show will be on Sep. 21 at The Forum.
