Passengers of the Queens-bound New York City subway train were initially surprised on Wednesday after discovering a dead shark in the car shortly after midnight and then became confused as to how it got there. The incident happened during "Shark Week" which is Discovery Channel's annual promotion devoted to the deep-sea creatures.

However, the Discovery Channel claimed through an unnamed spokeswoman that their "Shark Week" is not connected to the shark found in the subway train. Kevin Ortiz, spokesman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, revealed that the small dead shark was found on Wednesday shortly after midnight and transferred the passengers to another car before disposing the dead 4-foot long creature in a trash bin at the end of the train line.

One passenger who was identified only as "Mary M" divulged at blog Gothamist that an unpleasant smell reached her nose when she boarded the subway train. "I board a car that's not terribly full and as soon as I enter, a stench hits my nose. It's not the typical urine or trash smell, it's fishy? I look down to the end of the car to see a dead shark on the floor. I think I stood there for a good minute just staring, thinking 'Is this for real?! Oh come ON, NYC!'," Mary M shared.

She further added: "One of my fellow passengers remarked 'I've been riding the subway for 15 years, and this is the weirdest thing I've seen. And I've seen 'EVERYTHING.' The train filled as we made our way to Astoria, every new passenger was getting excited about it. Once we got to Queensboro Plaza, an MTA employee made all of us move to another car."

Images of the dead shark at the subway train were posted at the Gothamist Web site and immediately reached other social media sites like Twitter. It even included a couple of passengers poking fun at the dead shark where they placed a cigarette in its mouth, a subway fare card and a Red Bull can in close proximity.
