Deputy Mayor Salim Mehajer’s stained image won't stop him from dreaming of becoming Prime Minister
Auburn’s Deputy Mayor Salim Mehajer has indicated his desire to become a superstar prime minister.
Making the announcement on Monday, Mehajer says he is well aware his public image has been damaged by allegations, including threatening behaviour, driving charges, the misuse of resources at his infamous wedding and interest claims in his role on council. Despite his stained image, he still thinks he has a chance of becoming Australia’s prime minister.
When 9News requested Mehajer to sit down for an interview, he agreed to talk but wanted to speak from behind a lectern, which is the style of delivering speeches by prime ministers.
“I would like to start off by being in state, federal and I would like to make my way up to the very top spot. That would be my dream come true,” Mehajer said at his 'interview'. “I don’t believe I have what it takes to be a superstar but see what happens. If an opportunity knocks on my door I am always willing for a challenge.”
The deputy mayor also defended himself on 9News, saying he was neither corrupt nor does he have a threatening behaviour. He claimed that he never violated the rules of the council and worked according to policies. The developmental properties that he used for his wedding were purchased before he entered into local government politics.
Mehajer said that he shut down the Lidcombe streets without any grants, but only to show his love for his would-be-wife. “The wedding was only an event to show gratitude to my wife,” he said, while his wife Aysha accompanied him. He added that he did it not only to show the world how to treat a woman, but to also put forth a standard that his future brothers-in-law would need to maintain.
Prior to this year's leadership change in Australia, Mehajer had written to former PM Tony Abbott, saying he wanted to follow in his footsteps.
