The "Devil May Cry" (DMC) series is considered the gold standard amongst fans of the hack-and-slash style of action adventure games focusing on combat. "Devil May Cry 3" (DMC3) is widely believed to be the best in the series, due to its challenging difficulty, adaptive enemy AI and excellent balance. The upcoming Special Edition release of "Devil May Cry 4" (DMC4) should greatly interest fans of the series because the game will include the best elements and characters from DMC3.

The developer Capcom has confirmed through a blog post that "Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition" (DMC4SE) is currently under development. The game will launch on PC, PS4 and Xbox One sometime this summer. Surprisingly, the special edition will be restricted to a digital only release. After dropping a hint about a possible Special Edition back in December 2014, the company has finally taken to blog to reveal the finer details of what fans should expect from the re-release. As it turns out, DMC4SE will incorporate a great variety of additions that should give fans good reasons to revisit the game.

In addition to the main protagonist Nero and series regular Dante, the Special Edition adds three new characters to the mix, according to Gamespot. This includes Dante's brother Virgil and Lady from DMC3 and series regular Trish. All characters are playable and incorporate varied fighting styles and move sets that radically modify gameplay. The blog post provides a detailed overview of the new characters and what they bring to the table in DMC4SE.

Dante's brother Vergil will be playable on any mission within the game and differentiate himself with the iaijutsu sword fighting style. Players choosing to play as him will be rewarded for flawless play style through the new "concentration" mechanic. Achieving that sort of play style will make his attacks even more powerful.

Playing as Trish involves using fewer buttons, but Capcom still says that her fighting style will have a lot of depth. Her inventiveness and versatility with the Sparda sword, pistols and even bare hands allows her to do away with the weapon switching mechanic used by other characters. Trish will only be playable on Dante's missions. Lady is the final new addition to the roster and she will be playable on Nero's missions. Her firearm based combat style will make the game feel radically different.

DMC4SE will also ship with a horde mode dubbed the Legendary Dark Knight mode, which pits players against overwhelming waves of enemies. In addition to new costumes, the special edition will feature improvements to the "game tempo and balancing." Capcom has promised that the final build will run at smooth 60fps and 1080p on all platforms.
