Veteran actress Diane Lane has been hired to play Clark Kent’s adoptive mother in the upcoming Superman series. Director Zack Snyder broke the news in a statement as he introduced the choice for the role of the mother of Superman to be played by 27-year-old British big screen and stage actor, Henry Cavill.

The project which has remained untitled to this date, is set for release in December 2012.

"This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman," director Snyder was quoted by Reuters as saying in a statement.

Described by Reuters as “considerably [a] younger casting choice” for Superman’s mom, the 46-year-old Lane is younger than Eva Marie Saint, who was the choice for the role in 2006 Man of Steel sequel. According to Reuters, Saint was 80 years old when cast as Clark Kent’s mom in “Superman Returns” in 2006.

Director Snyder has expressed his excitement over the producers choice, underscoring how Diane Lane can perfectly fit as a mother of a superhero.

Snyder said, "We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination."

Other than Diane Lane and Eva Marie Saint, Phyllis Thacker also played the same role in 1978’s “Superman”. Thacker was 57 year-old at that time.
