Dita Von Teese slams modern waist training products endorsed by Kardashian, Jenner girls
World-renowned burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese doesn’t think that anyone should be taking waist training notes from the Kardashians. They may have started a recent corset fad, but the long-time advocate of the garment doesn’t think that their methods are necessarily effective.
“It’s like the blind leading the blind,” said Von Teese as she talked to HuffPost Live about the Kardashian waist training phenomenon. “I'm seeing some of these corsets that they're saying are waist shapers and I'm like, 'That doesn't work.' They're like stretchy fabric,” she continued.
She said that the use of classic corsets and the new breed of waist shapers have gained momentum due to the endorsements of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, and many women are attracted to the idea because it’s a “fast fix.” Putting on a corset, she said, instantly gives someone the coveted hourglass silhouette. However, to truly modify one’s body, a more strict regimen must be followed, and there are many experts on the subject... not the Kardashians.
“People that actually know a lot about corsetry are not the ones that are publicly speaking about it,” she said. At one point, Von Teese claimed that she has measured down to a 17-inch waistline at one point in her career.
Despite what Von Teese thinks, the Kardashian-Jenner marketing machine is one of the most successful product endorsement platforms in modern media. Corset Center, a website dedicated to the garment, has published an article about the Kardashian-induced corset craze. The article claims that the products work, contrary to what Von Teese is saying. “While some experts say that this is a temporary solution and a shortcut to a hourglass figure, it really works!” reads the article.
When Khloe Kardashian started posting photos of herself while waist training, she raised some concerns about the health implications of wearing such a restrictive garment. Recently, even the youngest member of the brood, Kylie Jenner, has started to promote the product.
Effective or not, fans of the Kardashian-Jenner girls who wish to emulate the celebrities' looks are lapping up every product that the sisters endorse. The success of Kylie Jenner’s recently launched Lip Kit is a further testament to the family’s pop culture influence.
