Eminem drops out of Forbes' top 10 rappers of 2016, ranks 9th on hip hop's cash kings of the decade
Due to his dwindling income and lack of Eminem new album, Marshall Mathers almost failed to land a spot on Forbes magazine’s list of top-earning hip-hop acts of the decade.
Eminem managed to rank ninth on Forbes’ ranking of the cash kings in the hip-hop industry. Slim Shady only made US$151 million (AU$197 million) since 2007 while Dr Dre emerged to the top after accumulating $923 million (AU$1.2 billion) in the last 10 years.
“The Detroit rapper proved you can still earn nine figures from nothing but music. He cashes on his extensive catalogue of hits with lucrative live shows,” Forbes said.
The “Lose Yourself” rapper reportedly earned only US$11 million (AU$14.3 million) between June 2015 and June 2016, which forced him out of Forbes’ top 10 hip hop acts of 2016. This latest pre-tax haul is way below the US$31 million (AU$40.3 million) he made in 2015.
“It’s been a comparatively quiet year for Marshall Mathers, who continues to cash in on his extensive catalogue of hits,” Forbes pointed out as Eminem ranked 18th on the latest ranking.
“He only played three shows during our scoring period, but made them count: they were all at South American iterations of the Lollapalooza music festival in front of tens of thousands of fans.”
Eminem debuted on Forbes’ Celebrity 100 list in 2011, when he ranked 71st among the world’s highest paid celebrities. He slid to the 82nd rank in 2015, and he eventually dropped out of the list in 2016.
Eminem new album release
There is still no clue as to when the 43-year-old rapper will release his next album. Slim Shady’s last studio album, “Marshall Mathers LP 2,” was released on Nov. 5, 2013, as a sequel to the “Mashall Mathers LP,” which was released back in 2000. Eminem’s “Marshall Mathers LP 2” topped the Billboard 200 chart after the album sold 792,000 copies within only five days. Just like his previous chart-topping albums, Eminem’s 2010 album “Recovery” sold 741,000 copies on its launch week while his 2009 album “Relapse” sold 608,000 copies instantly.
Without releasing a new album, Eminem’s income is set to hit the gutter.
