A dead sperm whale exploded while a marine biologist cuts it open along the coast of Faroe Islands. The exploding whale was caugh on camera with its innards blasted away from the sides like an angry volcano.
The video begins with a fluorescent-orange clad man cuts open the sperm whale's side very gently. Moments later, the tiny cut triggered the whale's insides to explode. Reports said that the whale was cut open to prevent a health hazard.
Experts explained the explosion was caused by a gas pocket inside the whale's blubber. There are previous reports of a combusting giant sea creature. Biologist Adam Ruben explained on the Science Channel that the creature may have consumed decomposing fish resulting in a buildup of gas inside the body.
The person in the video was identified as Bjarni Mikkelsen who was showered with sperm whale guts in the explosion. He was sent by the National Museum of Faroe Islands to cut open the dead sperm whale that measured 15 metres long. According to reports, the sperm whale was one of the two whales that had been trapped in a narrow body of water in the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic.
The Danish community in the island reportedly wants the skeleton of the sperm whale to be lace in a museum.
Infamous whale explosion
While the sperm whale explosion was due to a natural cause, another video of an exploding whale was caught on video during the 1970s and since then became viral. The man responsible for the explosion, Oregon highway engineer George Thornton, had died in early November at 84.
He was remembered as the one who orchestrated the explosion of a beached and decomposing whale that measured 45 feet and weighed 8 tons. He decided to make the whale explode using dynamite since the sea creature had begun to emit an "incredible" stench that left the community at a loss of what to do.
After consulting with the experts and the Navy, Mr Thornton decided to detonate the whale since it was the best course of action for an animal that size. He had hoped the explosion would help cut the whale in chunks so crabs, sea gulls and other animals can eat it. He used 20 crates of dynamite to make the whale explosion work.
