Fernando Alonso Crashes In F1 Testing; See Full Combined Results Of Second Pre-Season Test In Barcelona
Spanish race car driver Fernando Alonso has crashed his car during Formula One, or F1, second pre-season test in Barcelona, Spain. Alonso reportedly went off the track between turns three and four before slamming the right-hand side of his McLaren-Honda car into the wall.
According to a statement from McLaren as reported on F1’s official site, the crash happened around midday (12:35 CET) of the fourth and final day of the second pre-season test at Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona. Emergency responders shortly arrived at the scene of the crash. Alonso went through a thorough examination before he was airlifted to a hospital for further evaluation.
“Fernando was driven to the circuit’s Medical Centre where the circuit’s doctors gave him first aid,” McLaren said in a statement. “He was conscious and spoke with the doctors.”
McLaren-Honda released no further information about the cause of the accident. It later said that Alonso was unscathed other than a concussion and stayed in the hospital overnight. McLaren-Honda Racing Director Eric Boullier said that Alonso’s crash was just a “normal accident” that happens during testing.
