Fifth Harmony’s Normani Kordei leaves Twitter amidst racial discrimination
Fifth Harmony's Normani Kordei said she's taking a break from Twitter after being cyberbullied with racist tweets. Kordei wrote the emotional statement on her Twitter account on Saturday.
“Over the past four years of being in the public eye I’ve learned to grow a thick skin to critics and those who may not like me,” the 20-year old singer stated.
“I’ve never been one to deny anyone of their opinions, but over the course of this last week and especially over the last 48 hours I’ve not just been cyber bullied, I’ve been racially cyberbullied with tweets and pictures so horrific and racially charged that I can’t subject myself any longer to the hate,” Kordei posted a lengthy tweet on her social media account.
There have been rumours of a rift between the members of Fifth Harmony about the issue purporting the focus was set only on Camila Cabello, who is currently working on solo material.
Normani received the online abuse after she was accused of shading Camila by taking too long to say anything nice about her in a recent interview.
Normani addressed this issue by remarking how much she’s committed for the success of Fifth Harmony. She further said that people have absolutely no idea what goes on in their group and are simply creating foolish assumptions. She goes on to say how often she’s found herself as “the target of unjust hate and slander.”
“I’m not the first black female celebrity to deal with this and I’m sure I won’t be the last,” Kordei continued. “I want to take this moment to say Love goes much further than hate in this world. Hiding behind a computer and putting people down, especially for the color of their skin doesn’t make you cool, it make you a coward!”
Racial discrimination and cyberbullying have been rampant and celebrities are no exceptions to this. Before Kordei, “Ghostbusters” actress Leslie Jones also suffered the same ordeal and did not back down from the fight. (Click here for the related story.)
