Floyd Mayweather May Extend Showtime Contract
Floyd Mayweather has two more fights left in his lucrative contract with Showtime. However, the unbeaten World Boxing Association (WBA) and World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight champion is reportedly thinking of extending his contract with Showtime.
Speaking to Fight Hype, Mayweather revealed that he may fight on because he is delving on a contract extension with the television network. Mayweather recently scored his 47th straight victory in his rematch with Argentine Marcos Maidana in September. A contract extension with Showtime would see the five-division world champion exceed 49 professional bouts.
"Even though I only have two fights left, you know, some days I think about signing a new contract and extending," Mayweather told Fight Hype. According to Mayweather, he is only contemplating about it and he is not 100 percent sure if he really wants to fight more.
Prior his rematch against Maidana in September, Mayweather has said in an ESPN report that he has plans to retire in 2015. He said that he just wants to focus on his company, Mayweather Promotions, after his next and last two fights.
If Mayweather extends his Showtime contract and signs for six more fights, he would earn as much as half a billion dollars. Forbes reported in February that Mayweather's Showtime contract plus the takings of pay-per-view sales has guaranteed him $250 million.
Mayweather's next fight will be in May 2015. Amir Khan has been chasing Mayweather for a fight. Khan has even shunned his former sparring partner Manny Pacquiao and said in an interview with Ben Thompson of Fight Hype that he is "faster and box better" than the Filipino eight-division world champion. He blew his own trumpet and further said that he hasn't been knocked down in a fight, unlike Pacquiao, who was knocked down by Juan Manual Marquez in the pair's fourth meeting. He added that he was able to beat Maidana too. According to Khan, he has got the youth and the talent that makes him more deserving to get a shot at Mayweather's unbeaten record.
Meanwhile, Pacquiao has said that the fight between him and Mayweather is likely to take place in 2015. The elder Mayweather has backed Pacquiao's statement and said that the fight between the two boxing legends will definitely happen. However, Mayweather has untiringly denied having such talks about a mega fight between him and the Filipino fighter.
