Former WBO Cruiserweight Champion Johnny Nelson: ‘If Anyone Is Going To Give Mayweather Trouble, It’s Khan’
Former World Boxing Organization cruiserweight champion Ivanson Ranny "Johnny" Nelson said that Amir Khan poses a threat to Floyd Mayweather Jr. if the Bolton-born boxer emerges victorious in his upcoming fight against Devon Alexander. Nelson thinks Khan can give the undefeated boxer problems if they get in the ring together.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Nelson talked about Khan's upcoming fight with Alexander, as well as Khan's potential fight with Mayweather. He said that the Mayweather fight should be easy for Khan if he gets past Alexander.
According to Nelson, Khan has done a pretty good job in keeping his name in the loop for the Mayweather fight. He added that it is a "big shout" for Khan to be included in the list of Mayweather's potential opponents. Nelson thinks that it will also be a big fight if Khan secured a fight with the Grand Rapids native boxer.
"Khan is just completely wrong for him (Mayweather), he's too young, his tempo is too high, and his hands are too fast," Nelson said. "If anyone is going to give Mayweather trouble, it's Khan."
Khan returns on the ring on Dec. 13 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas. He is going to face Alexander. If Khan delivered well, then he sure will be a favourite to face Mayweather, who is eyeing to return to the ring in May 2015.
Meanwhile, Khan has recently admitted that the Alexander bout is the biggest fight in his career. He said via the Daily Star that the bout could make or break his career. Khan said that the outcome of the will determine who is the better fighter.
Khan said that his main motivation for the fight is Mayweather. He is working hard so he can win the fight and hopefully get a shot at Mayweather. Khan believes that a win over Alexander can put him in the elite level of fighters, which he hopes also earns him the right to fight the best fighters like Mayweather and even his former sparring mate Manny Pacquiao.
Khan will defend his World Boxing Association International and World Boxing Council Silver Welterweight titles, which he won against Luis Collazo in May. Alexander, on the other hand, only had two losses in his career, against Timothy Bradley and former International Boxing Federation titlist Shawn Porter.
