France Drops South Korea In Women’s World Cup
France was off to a fast start and sent South Korea home with a 3-0 victory to advance in the quarterfinals of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup on Sunday.
The French starters, who were picked from Lyon and Paris Saint-Germaian, proved too much for a Korean squad that squandered their way to the round of 16 in a come-from-behind win against Spain. In similar fashion to a 5-0 decimating win against Mexico, Les Bleues smothered South Korea in the early period of the first half and scored two goals within the starting eight minutes of the match.
Forward Marie-Laure Delie opened the scoring in the fourth minute mark followed by an Elodie Thomis goal four minutes later. The 28-year old Olympique Lyon footballer spoiled South Korea’s Cinderella run in the tournament after nailing a pass from Eugenie Le Sommer. Delie again scored in the 48th mark after Le Sommer drove into the area setting up a beautiful pass for the third goal of the game.
South Korea’s first trip to the knockout stage in its second try was not how they expected it to be, but will certainly be a lesson for improvement in their following campaigns. Teaguk Ladies played without leading scorer So-yun Ji, who sat out with a thigh injury.
Coach Philippe Bergeroo’s squad dominated the Koreans and outmatched them in every possession despite their never-say-die attitude. Les Bleues stayed in the driver’s seat for the rest of the game after a 3-0 advantage in the early period with a desperate South Korea kicking goals high over the net.
France will have a tougher match on Friday against Germany. The German squad thrashed Sweden in their round of 16 clash with a 4-1 win behind striker Celia Sasic, who netted goals in the 36th and 78th minute mark of the game . Germany have scored a total of 19 goals in their past four games in the tournament.
