‘Fresh Off The Boat’ Season 2 Should Know Taiwan Isn’t China, Skeptics Say
ABC’s comedy series “Fresh Off The Boat” season 2 is set to premiere in 2016. The show has yet to get an official release date and the writers appear to have an ample time to consider the clamor of its sceptical critics.
The first season of “Fresh Off The Boat” ended on April 21 with an episode titled “So Chineez,” which featured Jessica Huang (Constance Wu) worries that her immigrant family is not Chinese enough and is losing its Chinese heritage.
The ABC comedy series was based on the real life of famous chef Eddie Huang. Since the Huang family in the series emigrated from Taiwan, the family should be seen as Taiwanese and not Chinese, according to critics.
One of the critics, Roger Chen, 32, told Wall Street Journal that the ABC show says it is about a Taiwanese family’s experience in the United States “so why now say they are from China?”
“I can’t tell if it is just pure ignorance or the show producers are bowing to Chinese influence,” the Taiwanese computer engineer told the publication adding that he will not watch “Fresh Off The Boat” season 2.
Meanwhile, Wu recently said she is surprised by her newfound fame after playing the matriarch of the Huang family in “Fresh Off The Boat.” Prior to this, she appeared in TV series “Spook” and “Eastsiders.”
In a recent interview with Gold Derby, Wu said some friends are telling that she is going to get an Emmy nomination for her “Fresh Off The Boat” performance but she is afraid she might disappoint them although she is optimistic.
Wu said from the first time she read “Fresh Off The Boat” script, she knew the role of Jessica Huang was for her. She said at the time, she though the series creator Nahnatchka Khan had written some really weird lines in the script.
“Fresh Off The Boat” season 2 will pick up from the first season’s “So Chineez” episode, in which Jessica Huang started to dress in a traditional Chinese dress called qipao and serve chicken feet for dinner, and even asked her children off to Mandarin lessons.
Joining Wu in the “Fresh Off The Boat” cast are Ian Chen, Forrest Wheeler, Hudson Yang, Lucille Soong, Paul Scheer, Jillian Armenanter, and James Franco and Seth Rogen’s “The Interview” co-actor Randall Park, among others.
