Game of Thrones: HBO’s Fantasy Drama Tops Nominations at Cinematographers’ TV Awards [PHOTO/VIDEO]
The fantasy drama, “Game of Thrones,” (GoT) has lead the American Society of Cinematographers’ TV awards with two nominees, allowing HBO to outnumber all other networks nominated for the elusive awards.
With only three categories in the ASC TV awards, HBO got the nod for two of three categories. ASC announced Wednesday that GoT was nominated in the “One-hour Episodic Television Series” category.
GoT’s Jonathan Freeman receives recognition for his work in the “Valar Dohaeris” episode while Anette Haellmigk was nominated for her work in the “Kissed by Fire” episode.
This is Freeman’s seventh nomination from the Cinematographers’ TV awards. He won three of seven nominations, said The Wrap. Among Freeman’s strong contenders include, David Franco with six ASC nominations, Kramer Morgenthau with five nominations, Peter Levy with four and Pierre Gil with three nominations from ASC TV Awards.
Franco is nominated for another HBO program, “Boardwalk Empire.” Morgenthau received the nod for “Sleepy Hollow,” Levy for “House of Lies,” and Gil for “Borgias.”
Franco’s nomination and two nominees from GoT allowed HBO to beat all other networks, which only had one nomination each for three ASC categories. Only Starz joined HBO ahead of the pack in the ASC awards with three nominees each.
Created by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, the “Game of Thrones" is an adaptation of George R. R. Martin's series of fantasy novels, “A Song of Ice and Fire.” The HBO’s hit show is titled after Martin’s first series, “A Game of Thrones.”
Founded in 1911, the American Society of Cinematographers is a group of directors of photography and special effects experts who have built reputation and “distinguished credits in the film industry.” With only 340 members, membership to the educational, cultural and professional organization is “by invitation only.”
