With “Final Fantasy Type-0 HD” set to debut on Xbox One and PS4 next week, Square Enix has rolled out a glut of new trailers designed to introduce players to the characters and world of Rubrum. The new trailers focus on protagonists Machina, Rem, Cinque, Cater and Trey. The publisher also released a new PAX 2015 trailer that provides some background on the events of “Type-0 HD.”

The character trailers feature the Japanese Square Enix YouTube channel and introducIing us to five members of Class Zero, an elite group of students from the magical academy, Vermillion Peristylium. Machina Kunagiri and Rem Tokimiya serve as the game’s narrators, while mace-wielder Cinque, magical-gun user, Cater, and Trey the archer are also spotlighted. The character trailers follow a previously released 18-minute video walkthrough of the game’s combat system. Square Enix also released a gritty new story trailer over the PAX East 2015 weekend. The video is hosted on the North American Square Enix YouTube channel and features bloody combat, graphic gunplay and a melancholy score, indicating that “Final Fantasy Type-0 HD” is much darker than previous games in the “Final Fantasy” series.

“Final Fantasy Type-0 HD” director Hajime Tabata is on record as stating that he aimed to create a more grounded “Final Fantasy” game, with deep emotional resonance. Speaking to IGN in a recent interview, he states that one of the game’s goals is to depict the wartime struggle for life and death in a manner that highlights the fragility of life.

“I really wanted to do a ‘Final Fantasy’ game that really depicted life and death – the value of life – in a much more mature, earnest way. That was part of the motivation for it. I think certainly in trying to depict that and figuring out how to show it in a serious way, the feeling of danger and the fragility of life, it requires you to depict characters in a very human way and make them believable as people,” said Tabata.
