Google expands Project Tango tablet to 12 more countries
Google has announced that it will make its “Project Tango” tablet development kit available for sale this month in 12 more countries. However, the company emphasized that currently, the development kit is intended for software developers only.
The search engine giant announced that Project Tango Tablet Development Kits will be available in South Korea and Canada from August 4. The development kit will be available in Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom on August 26.
Project Tango is best understood as a mobile platform that makes use of computer vision to enable devices to understand the world around them. Users based in these countries can buy Project Tango from the Google Play Store. Project Tango, which has been used by NASA for guiding flying robots in space, uses a depth sensing camera and other technologies that create a virtual 3D map of the world around it, making it convenient for developers to work on things like augmented reality and object tracking, reports PC World.
The tablet was initially priced at $1,024 (AU$ 1,397) and Google was reportedly in plans to expand the availability of the tablet. Currently, the tablet is available at a reasonable price of $512 (AU$ 698) and features an NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor, 4GB RAM, 128 GB of onboard storage, a 7-inch 1920 x 1080 HD display, reports 9to5Google. The tablet also packs a bunch of custom Project Tango software that is said to have been updated 13 times to include features like enhanced indoor navigation and GPS alignment.
“We’ve released 13 software updates that make it easier to create Area Learning experiences with new capabilities such as high-accuracy and building-scale ADFs, more accurate re-localization, indoor navigation, and GPS/maps alignment,” said Larry Yang, Product Manager, Project Tango. Google also said that the Project Tango community is growing with more than 3,000 developer devices shipped so far.
