Grammy Mistakenly Calls New Zealander Lorde As Australian

Lorde is a 17-year-old girl from Auckland, and Auckland is in New Zealand, Kiwis informed the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, which presents the Grammy Awards. When the award-giving body’s press release about the performers called the rising superstar an Australian, her fellow New Zealand citizens quickly pointed out the gaffe.

“Australian singer/songwriter Lorde will perform,” the original text in the press release for the Grammy Nominations Concert Live read.

The one-word blunder didn’t escape the notice of Lorde’s compatriots, who are obviously and understandably very proud of the teen prodigy.

“It’s like calling all Americans Canadians... and we don’t even share a landmass with Australia,” one reader from New Zealand wrote.

The Grammys then corrected its mistake, replacing “Australian” with “New Zealand” shortly after the releasing the announcement on Friday.

“Thanks Alan. We knew New Zealand was correct, but somehow we typed Australia. We’ve corrected it. Lorde have mercy on us,” the Grammys replied to a commenter, proving that it takes readers seriously while showing off its sense of humour.

It didn’t appear that Lorde was aware of her unwanted nationality change, though. And with four nominations, she’s likely to forgive the Grammys for its slip-up.

She is up for song of the year for “Royals,” best pop solo performance, best pop vocal album for “Pure Heroine,” and for record of the year. She’s up against Bruno Mars, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake, Pink, and Robin Thick among many others.

She wasn’t able to score a nod for the best new artist gong, but she didn’t seem to mind. She even sent her best wishes to Kendrick Lamar and James Blake, who are both nominated for best new artist along with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Kacey Musgraves, and Ed Sheeran.

The 56th Annual Grammy Awards will be held on January 26 in Los Angeles, while “The Grammy Nominations Concert Live!! – Countdown To Music’s Biggest Night” is held December 6 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.
