Grizzlies Looking To Add Ray Allen; Spurs, Warriors, Cavaliers Also Show Interest In Veteran Shooter
The Memphis Grizzlies are one of the most complete teams— both on offence and defence— in the NBA this season. They are looking to add more firepower, specifically on the wings and shooting by convincing veteran free agent Ray Allen to join the title-contending squad.
According to Shams Charania of RealGM.com, a popular sports news and forum website, the 39-year-old Allen is being courted by over five teams including the team from Tennessee. Mentioned teams chasing the veteran are the San Antonio Spurs, Cleveland Cavaliers, Chicago Bulls, Washington Wizards Los Angeles Clippers and Golden State Warriors— all of which, like the Grizzlies, are considered serious contenders for the NBA title this season.
The Warriors are one of the teams that has shown interest publicly with Golden State’s general manager Bob Myers openly recruiting Allen. Other teams like the Spurs, Clippers, Wizards and Bulls may open roster spots if they come into an agreement with the veteran. The Cavaliers, meanwhile always has the inside track in acquiring him because of his connection with LeBron James, who played with Allen in Miami, where the won a ring together.
"We threw our team out there at his representation, and I think they're vetting what they want to do," Myers said via an ESPN report last Friday. "Obviously you've got to look at a guy like that. He's a smart enough guy. He's going to look around the league to see what's best for him.”
Among the teams interested, it appears that Allen will find a larger role for his specialty, shooting, with Memphis, which is known more for their defensive style of play. The Grizzlies are currently at 19-4— the second best record in the entire league. Allen, who has made the NBA All-Star Team ten times in his career, is a two-time NBA champion winning titles with the Boston Celtics in 2008 and with the Miami Heat in 2013.
