'Hamilton' star Lin-Manuel Miranda to join 'Mary Poppins 2' cast
There are rumors that Lin-Manuel Miranda, star and creator of “Hamilton,” is discussing the possibility of starring in the sequel of the Disney film “Mary Poppins.”
According to Variety, the actor will potentially co-star with Emily Blunt in “Mary Poppins 2.” If the talks develop into an actual agreement, Miranda will take on the role of Jack, a lamplighter who closely resembles the character Bert in the 1964 movie, played by Dick Van Dyke.
The “Mary Poppins” sequel will have Marc Platt and John DeLuca as executive producer, while Rob Marshall ("Into the Woods") is set to serve as director.
The Disney classic “Mary Poppins” starred Julie Andrews, who took on the titular role, a nanny who arrived in Edwardian England to work for an unhappy banker’s family. The 1964 movie turned out to be a giant hit, raking in $100 million at the box office and earning five Oscars. Andrews won best actress for playing Mary.
Sources say that the upcoming film will be set in London during the Depression period, two decades after the events of the first movie. The story will focus more on Michael Banks, who is already an adult, as well as the return of Mary Poppins and older sister Jane. The books by author P.L. Travers were originally written at the same time.
The Hollywood Reporter cites that the original movie was mainly inspired by the first book by Travers, published in 1934. The last book in the series launched in 1988. When talks about the new project surfaced, Emily Blunt was immediately deemed as the most likely actress to take on the starring role.
Miranda is a multi-talented actor who is also well-known for his musical compositions. He previously made original music for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” as well as the upcoming “Moana” for Disney. He also wrote the script and songs for “Hamilton” and will most likely help write new songs for the “Mary Poppins” sequel soon.
Miranda is represented by WME, Liebman Entertainment and Shreck Rose Dapello& Adams. More updates and details on “Mary Poppins 2” and Lin-Manuel Miranda are expected soon.
