Headache: Rx – Sex 3X A Day
The common doctor's prescription for headache are pain relievers such as acetaminophen, aspirin or ibuprofen, more known with their brand names Tylenol, Bayer or Advil. However, a study by researchers at the University of Munster in Germany found a better cure which couples would surely welcome - having sex.
With the finding, published in Cephalalgia, the journal of the International Headache Society, the common excuse used to avoid physical intimacy, "Not tonight, dear, I have a headache," is no longer valid. The partner could suggest instead, "Let's cure your headache, honey, by passionate lovemaking."
The study had 800 migraine patients and 200 cluster headache patients who were asked by the researchers if indulging in sexual intercourse has an effect on their headache. Sixty per cent of those with migraine and 37 per cent of those with cluster headache said lovemaking reduced the intensity of their pain.
"The majority of patients with migraine or cluster headache do not have sexual activity during headache attacks. Our data suggest, however, that sexual activity can lead to partial or complete relief of headaches in some migraine and a few cluster headache patients," the study said.
The researchers explained the healing power of sex to the release of the hormones endorphins, through the central nervous system, which acts as natural painkillers. The other benefit of healing a migraine or headache through physical intimacy is the endorphins reduce the pain right away, while painkiller pills take 15 to 30 minutes.
With this finding, a sexual partner who wants intimacy could hint to his or her partner that he or she wants sex by saying, "Honey, I have a headache, let's go to bed." However, one downside to that especially for heterosexual couples is lovemaking could lead to unwanted pregnancy and that could result in either joy with the arrival of an unexpected child or a bigger headache if the couple is not prepared to have a baby in the house.
