Himalaya USA, a family owned company that manufactures personal healthcare products since 1930, has voluntarily recalled Organique by Himalaya Nourishing Night Cream due to the presence of staphylococcus aureus and fungus.

The products, which were recalled immediately, are from batches #S691001 and #S691002, and are sold in a cylinder shaped teal bottles with an orange cap. The batches were distributed nationwide in the United States and in Canada.

The voluntary recall was made due to the fact that products in the mentioned batches had traces of staph and fungus on the bottles' pump components - a component which was supplied to the company by a third party manufacturer.

Himalaya USA said that though no microbes were found in batch #S691002, the same pump components may have been used in its manufacturing, and hence took no chance and recalled the batch.

Fortunately, the company so far has not received reports of consumer injury, and is committed to testing all third party bottle components for the presence of microbes, while working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in the recall process.

Traces of staphylococcus aureus, which were found in the samples of the night cream, are commonly found in the environment and are frequently seen as normal flora found on skin. However, it may still cause some risks, especially among breastfeeding women, people with chronic condition such as diabetes, cancer, vascular disease, and lung disease, MedicineNet.com.

Being contagious, some of the staph infection's symptoms are a localized collection of pus, with the affected area red, swollen, and painful. If staph has reached the blood, it may cause high fevers, chills, and low blood pressure.

Staph infections can also progress to other forms of diseases such as impetigo, which is crusting of the skin; cellulitis, the inflammation of the connective tissue under the skin; or more serious complications like scalded skin syndrome, which can cause blister formation and sloughing of the top layer of skin.

In treating minor staph infection, antibiotic ointment such as a nonprescription triple-antibiotic mixture is usually advised. However, for more serious and life-threatening infections, intravenous antibiotics are used.
