‘How To Get Away With Murder’ Season 2 Finale Review: Another bloody ending for Wesley Gibbins (Spoilers)
“How To Get Away With Murder” Season 2 finale aired March 18 on ABC, where Shondaland characters are going through various levels of hell. Wesley Gibbins a.k.a. Christophe Edmond (Alfred Enoch) has witnessed the season’s closing kill; he is going to have a fresh set of questions in HTGAWM 3.
Spoiler alert: This review recaps the highlights of “How To Get Away With Murder” Season 2, Episode 15 (“Anna Mae”).
Cicely Tyson is back as Ophelia Harkness in the last episode of HTGAWM 2. She has plenty of scenes, making it hard to pick a favourite because Ms Tyson is such a powerhouse even in the quickest moments, like when she shrugs off her daughter’s ‘I hate you’ protest.
Who is Annalise Keating’s (Viola Davis) father? Annalise a.k.a. Anna Mae learns that her mother and runaway father seem to be on the verge of an official reunion, and Ophelia thinks it’s “nice.” Roger Robinson (“Rubicon”) makes his HTGAWM debut. This episode takes the viewers – and Nate Lahey (Billy Brown) – deeper into the personal history of Annalise. Nate and the fierce lawyer seem to have some romantic hope, after all.
Who killed the Hapstalls? Caleb (Kendrick Sampson) is the real murderer in the season-long Hapstall mystery. In the end, it appears he also killed himself. Caleb's adoptive sister Catherine (Amy Okuda) finally agrees to testify against him. The case dragged on for far too long that it should have, but there were so many other developments so it wasn’t too bad in the big picture. It turns out Philip Jessup (Jefferson White) is just a creepy evidence gatherer, not a murderer.
Who is Wes Gibbins’ father? Adam Arkin (“Chicago Hope”) portrays the role of bad guy Wallace Mahoney, the reason why Wes’ mother Rose Edmond (Kelsey Scott) killed herself and why Annalise lost her baby. The biggest shocker in “How To Get Away With Murder” Season 2 finale is the manner by which Wallace died – right next to Wes, just moments after the young man told him, “I think I’m your son.” Wallace’s last words were his response to Wes: “Why would you think that?” Wes was in the middle of saying Annalise Keating's name when the shot was fired.
Who killed Wallace Mahoney? Frank Delfino (Charlie Weber) may have reason to kill Wallace because he is over-burdened by guilt. Now, Frank has just learned that Wes is Wallace’s son. He may have been revolted anew by the fact that Mahoney did not just effectively kill Annalise’s baby; he also abandoned his own. However, it was obvious in his final moments that Wallace was in the middle of another crisis. Frank could be disconnected to this finale death, for a change.
“Sometimes you just have to put your characters through hell,” HTGAWM creator Pete Nowalk told TV Line. In an elaborate interview, the Shondaland producer compared Wes’ to Shonda Rhimes’ Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) from “Grey’s Anatomy.” Meredith survives one fresh hell after another, but the series is now on its 12th season.
As a kid, Meredith watched her mom try to kill herself. As an adult, Meredith saw a hostage-taker pin her husband at gunpoint, nearly died with her husband in a fatal plane crash, lost her mom to Alzheimer’s and later lost her husband to a car accident. Recently in the current season, a patient lost his mind and nearly killed Meredith in a violent assault. And the medical drama goes on.
As a kid, Wes watched his mother die, but memories of blood in his hands got so messed up in his mind. He thought he killed her. Wes struggled with this until he was a sophomore law student. When he finally acknowledged that it was a suicide, he also found out the identity of his biological father. He went to see him, then he wind up with blood spatter all over his face and clothes. Wes is seen taking some steps back, away from the lifeless body of his father, in the final moments of “How To Get Away With Murder” Season 2.
Sticking to its tradition, the Nowalk creation left viewers grappling with burning questions. Who killed Mahoney? Is Mahoney’s associate (Emily Swallow, “Supernatural”) involved in his death? Where is Frank now? How will things change for the Keating 5?
“How To Get Away With Murder” Season 3 is happening, ABC has confirmed. This means a long wait for answers, but fans would not mind as long as HTGAWM continues to deliver a good mix of shockers and one-liners from its dark and twisty characters.
